"Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed... But if I say, 'I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,' his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot."
- Jeremiah 20:14, 9
- Jeremiah 20:14, 9
The Persecutor Within
Jeremiah was exhausted. He had spoken hard truths and paid a heavy price for it. He was mocked, isolated, and worn down. At one point he considered just stopping. Why keep going? Why not let things sort themselves out? But he couldn't. He wrote that God's word was like a fire shut up in His bones. He was weary of holding it in, and he simply could not.
That image is striking because it doesn't describe a person who has it all together. It describes someone who is tired, who has counted the cost, and who keeps going anyway. Not out of obligation, but because something deeper than fear is driving them.
Most of us have felt a version of that fire. A cause we can't stop thinking about. A wrong we can't stop seeing. A person we can't stop caring for. That restlessness is not a burden. It is a gift. It is the Spirit stirring something holy in you.
Encouragement for today: You don't have to have all the answers or all the energy. You just have to be willing to let the fire lead you forward, one faithful step at a time.
Reflection Question
What is the "fire in your bones" right now, the thing you care about so deeply that staying silent feels impossible?
Prayer
Jesus, You faced every temptation we face and still chose the path of love and justice. Give us the courage to follow You even when it costs us something. Amen.
